Ma Ville Natale…Durham, North Carolina

durham-nc1.jpg

Here I am planning to share a little of my culture by beginning with my hometown of Durham where I have lived all of my life. Durham is a medium sized city of 200,000 people. Along with Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina and Chapel Hill, Durham forms “The Triangle”, a metropolitan area of about a million people. In the center of the Triangle is Research Triangle Park (RTP) which is the headquarters of Glaxo Smith-Kline, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, IBM and many other technology-based companies.

A little Zydeco Music!

    Hello Brian,

Thank you for writing and for deciding to belong to our blogging family. I will be pleased to read you either in English or in French. You are right, music is not only a means of entertainment and communication but also of connecting people. Your topic choice -music goes into the heart of it all: how can two different peoples and cultures get to know each other well? What appropriate means would help them go on discovering the treasures of each civilisation? Music will. On one condition:if they forget for a while about all the clichés, stereotypes and prejudices. Do you agree?
PS some of your blogging friends have started the topic; i think it would be a good thing if we pay them a visit in their blogs and see what they have written. This way we can develop the subject further….

In Durham, there is not one original type of music from Durham. However, every year there is a nationally renowned blues festival. Many jazz, zydeco, and blues musicians play at the old Durham Bulls baseball arena for about four days in the summer. Zydeco, from the french words “les haricots” or snap beans specifically in English. It is a creole music that uses accordions and washboards primarily. Today the music has been combined with African folk music, European classical music (such as waltzes), and jazzy rhythms. It is a really interesting sound and very popular in New Orleans. It comes from the French creoles in Louisiana and today’s zydeco is often combined with jazz, hip-hop, and rap. On my main page I have added a little video clip of a Zydeco regular at the Blue Festival so that you can get an idea of what the music is like.

Amazed that is how I felt after listening to your Zydeco music clip. It is the first time I hear about this type I never knew it existed. I love the accordion.
I have learned somethIng valuable about how blues and jAZZ could stretch that far to fuse with other types. I am not a good dancer but my wife is. And today to celebrate with you the new year i INVITED HER TO DANCE WITH ME JUST LIKE ON THE CLIP;WE THANK YOU FOR THE LIVLIHOOD YOU BROUGHT TO OUR HOME.
YOUR BLOG PICTURES ARE SO INFORMATIVE.

I am glad that you like it. It is definitely a different type of music but it is always one of the most popular types at the Blues Festival each year.

Since I was about five I have been learning music theory (notes, clefs, time signature, etc.) so I have always been really interested. I grew up listening to my parent’s record’s from the 70’s and ever since I have been a lover of music. Nowadays, I try to focus more on listening to all different types of music, rock, rap, ballads, foreign language, country, folk, etc.
